Day 14 & 15 — The Quest For ‘New’ #300DaysOfSurf

The answer lies in pushing yourself out of your comfort zone

There is something interesting about surfing new spots — every sandbank, every wave breaking on the shore is different and the waves in different spots have a ‘character’ you need to get used to and familiarize yourself.

Just 6.6Km away, Curl Curl is a south-facing beach that is a magnet for any hint of south swell. While lying in close proximity, I was never comfortable with the wave — an unruly beach break is how I classified it.

The shoreline seemed steeper which made the wave a hard breaking one and being in the wrong spot or where the waves broke only spelled trouble! Some of these factors never made it a compelling beach to surf however it pays to change your perspective sometimes.

As Mike Lay, a surfer I have started following said ‘chance to practice your skills in a new playing field’ and a journey to ‘keep learning’ about surf in new spots!

I felt like a novice, as I am exploring the new spot! Day 1 here (Overall Day 14) was rewarded with a view of a dolphin pod swimming at arms distance. There were many left breaks, forcing me to surf on my backhand — not my forte!

The wait…north curl curl in sydney

The waves were faster, a bit hollower forcing me to take steep take-offs and the end result was a session that fulfilled deeply. I got some lefts which made my day.

I think surfing, just like life teaches you things when you push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Why am I doing this?

No particular reason. I just hope that this journey encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and do something that enriches your journey and makes the most of the situation during this pandemic!

I will also be contributing to a cause at the end of this journey (for every day of surf I will be giving away $10 to a cause — details are to follow as I shortlist organizations creating positive impact via sport).

Money raised so far:

Day 14 and Day 15:

26 July and 27 July — $20

Total to date: $150
